Besedná hill and remains of the Drtina observation tower

The Besedná hill above the Hněvsín settlement has always been included in tour guides as a spot offering beautiful views of the Vltava region. And so it is no wonder that a wooden observation tower was built in this very spot in 1926. It was inaugurated on 11 July 1926 and named after PhDr. František Drtina, who had died shortly before the inauguration and was born in nearby Hněvšín. From 1907 to 1911, professor Drtina was an Imperial MP for Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk's Realistic Party. From November 1918, he was a member of the revolutionary National Assembly and a deputy Minister of Education and National Enlightenment. He also was a close friend of T. G. Masaryk. For years, the tower was very popular with its numerous visitors. Unfortunately, after 1948, its maintenance was limited and the tower became deteriorated within years. As a result of the negligence, the tower was dismantled in 1967. Today, there is no observation tower on the top of Besedná and the view is hindered by tall trees. But you can still find there largely preserved stone foundations of the tower and a panel providing information on the history of the tower together with its picture. The place is still charming and is definitely worth a visit. Recently, a construction of a new tower on the same spot has been considered.
