Forgotten small memorial in the woods off the road above Sla

Slapy and the surrounding landscape hold many mysteries. One of such mysterious places is, no doubt, a forgotten small stone memorial situated on a hill in the woods of the Nový Knín - Slapy road. Despite its location just dozens of metres off this busy road and the immediate vicinity of a car park frequently used by mushroom pickers, only a few know this place even exists. It is a stone L-shaped block. There are two crossed figures carved out (resembling swords, knitting needles or a grip of a hoe) and a few numbers and letters without any apparent meaning. The memorial is situated between four full-grown broad-leaved trees. The surroundings are overgrown with a younger vegetation of coniferous and broad-leaved trees making it clear that the whole location used to look very differently. The history of this monument is completely unknown. I have not found a single reference in historic guides; the small memorial is not shown on any map. The locals have two theories concerning the memorial. According to one theory, the memorial commemorates the murder of a young man whom his lover stabbed to death with a knitting needle when she learned that her chosen one was forced by his parents to marry another girl. According to the second theory, it is a memorial of a mining accident and the crossed figures are to symbolize the grips of miners’ hoes. It is true that in the Middle Ages several gold mines were located in this location and its surroundings. However, the explanation of this mystery is yet to come. Nevertheless, it is an interesting place and you should not miss it.

Route and transport to the site

Walking (approx. 3,6 km):

From the starting point, go through the Přestavlky village and get to the Slapy village square. Here, take the blue-marked hiking trail in direction of the Kocába valley. When you cross the main road connecting Prague and Nový Knín, take the blue-marked hiking trail in the forest; after some 150 metres it turns to the left. However, you need to go to the right and after another 100 metres, you will come to the mysterious and forgotten small memorial. It is advisable to join this trip with the trip to the defunct forest swimming pool and Helena’s oak that are not far from there. You will walk along forest paths and trails, avoiding any motor traffic. It is a nice walk, fit for any average hiker. When the weather is nice, the surrounding woods are ideal for mushroom picking.
