Karel Čapek Memorial in Strž u Staré Huti off Dobříš

The memorial is in fact a Karel Čapek museum. It was set up in a 19th century Empire-style house, originally an administrative building of the steelworks once in operation at the site. In the 1920s the house became a property of Václav Palivec, a businessman, who granted the right of lifetime use to the home to Karel Čapek and his wife Olga Scheinpflugová in 1935. They very much enjoyed their stays in the house, accompanied by friends. Among those who frequently visited was Ferdinand Peroutka, a well-known journalist and author. Karel Čapek himself participated in the renovation of the house and large garden. He wrote a number of his works here (War with the Newts, The White Disease, The First Rescue Party, Travels in the North, The Mother, The Life and Work of Composer Foltýn). The building houses a large exhibition on the life and work of Karel Čapek, as well as exhibitions devoted to Olga Scheinpflugová and Ferdinand Peroutka. The garden adjacent to the house is open to the public. In addition to this, there is also a nature trail, about 7 km long, leading past some of Karel Čapek's favourite spots, as well as sites connected to metallurgy, an industry once thriving in the area. The place is definitely worth a visit, even if you decide not to visit the memorial as such. The area is truly charming and offers beautiful walks in the countryside.

Route and transport to the site

This site is not suitable for a hike from Slapy, due to its remoteness. The combination of car ride and a walk is ideal.

Cycling (approx. 21 km):

Golf Slapy - Buš - Čím - Chotilsko - Prostřední Lhota - Libčice - Chramiště - Stará Huť - Strž. The cycling route is paradoxically longer than the route for cars, but it is much more interesting. From Slapy to Prostřední Lhota follow local roads. In Prostřední Lhota near the granary start following the blue-marked hiking trail direction Stará Huť and Dobříš. The trail, mostly following field paths, will take you through the deep forests of the Dobříš region and the Kocába valley to the Strž pond in Stará Huť. From there, use local direction indicators. You can leave your bike in a bike stand directly on the memorial premises. You can obviously also take the route recommended for cars, but it consists of busy asphalt roads. The trip is suitable for moderately experienced cyclists.

By car (approx. 18 km):

Golf Slapy - Buš - Nový Knín - Mokrovraty - Stará Huť. From Stará Huť, follow local direction indicators. You can park your car at the car park next to the Strž pond. From there, the memorial is only a few dozens of metres away.
