Ruins of the Ostromeč Castle + abbot's Zavoral viewpoint

The ruins of the Ostromeč castle are located on a rocky headland above the confluence of Vltava and the Mastník creek. The castle was founded in 1424.But it was abandoned as early as 1542. Today, there are almost no remnants left. There is a hiking trail leading to the site, but there are only modest foundations of one of the palaces and a pile of stones, once a square tower, to see. Moreover, the headland is rather overgrown with vegetation blocking the view. But this mysterious place is still worth a visit. On your way to the site, you can also visit the Celtic oppidum Hrazany (you need to walk through the oppidum to get to Ostromeč anyway). In addition to this, you can also visit abbot's Zavoral viewpoint with its granite cross from 1939, which can be found on the route about one kilometre before Ostromeč. From the viewpoint, you can enjoy a beautiful view of the river and the Kobylníky settlement on the opposite bank.

Route and transport to the site

Walking (approx. 25 km):

This site is not suitable for a hike from Slapy, due to its remoteness. The combination of car ride and a walk is ideal.

Cycling (route 1: approx. 35 km/ route 2: approx. 25 km):

As the site lies on the opposite bank of Vltava from Slapy, you need to cross one of the two bridges across Vltava.  As the crow flies, the site is about 7 kilometres far from Slapy, but due to the broken terrain and the necessity to go around numerous bays and valleys, the journey by land is a bit longer.

Route 1: Golf Slapy - Buš - Čím - Křeničná - across the Živhošť bridge in the direction towards Neveklov - after Stranný turn-off direction Nová Živohošť - turn-off direction Nahoruby - Radíč - Nová Ves - Žďár - Hrazany.

Route 2: Golf Slapy - Buš - Čím - Chotilsko - Prostřední Lhota - Mokrsko - Čelina - across the Cholín bridge direction Neveklov - Nalžovice - Nová Ves - Žďár - Hrazany.

From Hrazany, you need to follow the blue and yellow-marked hiking trail, which will take you to the abbot's Zavoral viewpoint and the remains of the Ostromeč castle. You can also visit the Celtic oppidum Hrazany, since you will be going directly through it on your way. The trip is quite demanding and will take a whole day to make.

Car (route 1: approx. 35 km/ route 2: approx. 25 km):

To visit Ostromeč, follow the same route as recommended for cyclists. You can leave your car in Hrazany and, from there, follow the blue-marked hiking trail and then the yellow-marked hiking trail until you reach the ruins after about 2.5 kilometres. Alternatively, you can leave your car in the near-by village of Radíč and follow the blue- and yellow-marked hiking trails via Radíč - Kozí hřbet castle - abbot's Zavoral viewpoint - Ostromeč - Hrazany - Radíč. The circuit is about 11 kilometres long and it will take you to the most interesting sites in the area. This route is not very demanding and will be the best option for most.
