Třebenice and its tramps’ pub U Taterů

Třebenice is an ancient village situated above the Vltava canyon. The first mention of the village dates back to 1055. For many years, the village consisted of a few houses scattered on the plain above the Vltava river. It used to be a secluded place banked by deep forests and rock walls. Until the late 1940’s, only one forest road lead to the village, branching off the main road from Nový Knín to Prague, leading through forests around the Červená hora (Red Mountain) and Kolna mountains. Only when the construction of the Slapy dam was begun (1949), a new road from Slapy to the village was built and a large housing estate for the dam construction workers was set up in the fields below the village.

Nowadays, the original houses are hidden among new buildings and the numerous cottages; you can find them mainly in the upper part of the village in the vicinity of the original chapel from 1870.Thanks to the Vltava river and Saint John’s Currents, the Třebenice village gained popularity in the 1920’s, giving rise to a number of tramp settlements as well as individual cottages and log cabins. Many settlements still exist, preserving their community spirit. It is in the old part of the Třebenice village where a genuine old hiker’s pub U Taterů still exists. The pub opened in 1920 and has been in continuous operation since then up to the present day. Local settlement residents as well as cottage owners, passers-by and tourists are always heartily welcome. Don’t miss the opportunity to visit this special, quirky place.

Route and transport to the site

You will go through a forest villa neighbourhood called Na Vyhlídce, ascending mildly, and you will come to the Pod Homolí crossing, passing over the Red Mountain (Červená hora). From here, take the blue marked hiking trail in direction to Třebenice. After a kilometre, you will come to the Kolna crossing with a nice information board on the history of the region. Another kilometre further on and you will leave the forest and will be able to enjoy the view of the Vltava valley with its impressive rocks. Route 2: Take the red marked hiking trail in the Slapy village square in the direction of Rovínek. Going by the magic spring, you will reach the Rovínek Chapel. From here, continue on the red-marked hiking trail ascending moderately up to the road leading from Slapy to Třebenice. Cross the road and continue through the forest taking the red-marked hiking trail up to the crossing Kolna with a nice information board on the history of the region. From now on, you will continue on the blue-marked hiking trail in the direction of Třebenice. Another kilometre further on and you will leave the forest and will be able to enjoy the view of the Vltava valley with its impressive rocks. Cycling (approx. 5 km):

Same as walking route 1. Approximately one third of the route goes uphill, the rest, however, is a nice downhill forest road. The biking route is not too demanding.

By car (approx. 7,3 km):

If you want to go to Třebenice by car, you will have to get to the Slapy village to a crossroads at the transport café and then turn right in the direction of the dam and Nová Rabyně. The road will lead you after a few kilometres to the dam, you will pass by the dam and after a few hundreds of metres you will come to a car park in the centre of “New” Třebenice. You need to park your car here and continue on foot. You can drop into the restaurant located near the car park. From the car park, take the blue-marked hiking trail to the old Třebenice. The legendary U Taterů pub is less than a kilometre down the road. Doing this walk, you can also visit the Slapy dam. Literally anyone can do this walk.
